Environmental Challenges for Hearing Aids

Hearing Aids for Different Destinations

Travel should be enjoyable and easy. Challenges like delays and visas, currencies and personal safety are common. Then there are crises like the Coronavirus outbreak. Whether you are travelling for work or pleasure, if you are losing your hearing then wearing a hearing aid is essential for getting things done. Different destinations have different sounds, smells, tastes, feelings and your hearing aid needs care to function properly and maintain your quality of hearing and quality of living, or working, experience. At Clarisound we can recommend appropriate protection products and international best practices for hearing aid care in different environments. Here is some advice for different destinations.

Sun and Sand

Dusty, hot environments can present dangers. In the desert, wind and heat are your biggest enemies, so make sure you store hearing aids in a cool place when not in use and try wearing a hat to prevent dust from being blown into your hearing aid. Cleaning nightly with a soft cloth is recommended.

In the Tropics

If the climate is subtropical, hearing aids need protection from moisture in the air as well as sweat. Your sweat won’t fully evaporate, which means more ends up near your ears. To prevent this try wearing a sweatband and store your hearing aids in a dehumidifier overnight.

Cold and Skiing

In a freezing environment try wearing a woolly hat and earmuffs when outdoors. This helps prevent extreme cold from damaging the electronics inside and your hearing aids. Cold can also affect battery life, so wipe down the battery compartment with a dry cloth to ensure no condensation has built up.

High Altitude

While the elevation at your first destination may not be that high, you may travel around nearby where elevation is much higher. High altitudes require a 24-hour period of acclimatisation and often exacerbate tinnitus. Your hearing aids may need to be adjusted.

Sudden Downpours

Weather can change rapidly. The most important consideration for your hearing aid is keeping it dry. Sudden downpours can happen, and water sports like surfing and scuba diving have risks. Ask our audiologists about waterproof hearing aids.

Cruising With Hearing Aids

Most major cruise lines are equipped to accommodate hearing-impaired guests to varying degrees. To make sure that you have a great cruise don’t forget to take your storage and cleaning kits, dehumidifier, extra batteries and bluetooth accessories. If you get stuck onboard due to Coronavirus, or another unforeseen incident, then you can still make the most of your holiday.
