A Visit To The Audiologist: Get Your Hearing Checked For FREE At Clarisound

Going to see an audiologist to get your hearing checked may conjure up images in your mind of a visit to the doctor or even the dentist. In reality, it’s quite different. I booked an appointment online and took a Grab to Clarisound’s Mid Valley outlet. It was easy to find, and I was shown straight into the room by one of Clarisound’s friendly, professional audiologists.

Hearing Checklist

My hearing check started with some questions; Do I have difficulty hearing when I’m in a group of people, when I’m using my handphone, and so on. My answers were ‘No’. So far so good. Then Clarisound’s audiologist took a look into my ears using an otoscope, it’s kind of a combination between a torch and a magnifying glass. I explained that a month or so ago I’d had an ear infection and an ENT specialist had cleaned up my ear. I’d seen inside my ear for the first time. Quite an experience. All good, my ears were clear and clean. Now for the hearing test.

Test Your Hearing

I sat inside a state-of-the-art cabinet with a glass front. It was quite fun as the acoustic deadening material covering the inside of the cabinet made my voice sound funny, to me anyway, when I started speaking, like a deep booming version of my own voice. I was given a hand control with a button and told to press it every time I heard a noise. I duly did so as I heard a series of noises akin to a computer sound go off loudly then more softly, then disappear, first in my right ear, then in my left ear. Emerging from the cabinet after only a few minutes I was told that I have hearing loss. Moderate, high frequency hearing loss to be more precise.

Moderate Hearing Loss

For some time, I had been slightly concerned about my hearing. I have had difficulty understanding some people’s accents, and their pronunciation, when they are in crowded bars or speaking to me from another room in my apartment. I wondered if it was them, or if it was me. The answer was given to me by my hearing check at Clarisound. It was both. The audiologist at Clarisound showed me a couple of print outs of the results of my hearing test. Low frequency hearing was fine, high frequency hearing was mild to moderately impaired. The audiologist explained to me that this would make speech discrimination in noise and following a conversation more difficult, especially if there were no visual clues if the other person is wearing a mask. I was also informed that moderate, high frequency hearing loss is most commonly caused by noise exposure and aging.

I didn’t feel that this hearing loss has, as yet a significant impact on my personal or professional life and decided not to go any further at this stage. Over time I’ll monitor my hearing loss with Clarisound FREE hearing test offer, and should I decide to start wearing hearing aids I will go back to Clarisound not just for hearing aids but for counselling too.
