Good Narratives For Hearing Aids

Everyone has their own story. What we see, and hear, in the world has increasingly become called narratives by the media, and business professionals. Whatever your, and your loved ones, story is, it must involve good hearing. If you are losing your hearing then fitting and wearing a suitable hearing aid will restore your hearing and your ability to hear the narratives that around in the world.

Descriptions Of Hearing Aids

Most of us have heard someone who is a know-all. Then there are people who tell you what they think you want to hear. If you, or your loved ones, are losing your hearing then you must get your hearing checked as soon as possible. The best way to restore your hearing, and your quality of life, is to visit a professional audiologist, like Clarisound. A study in Ear and Hearing in 2021 found that short-term evaluations of hearing aids can be strongly influenced by narratives provided by the hearing healthcare provider at the time of a hearing aid fitting. This means that descriptions of hearing aids influence the experience of listening with hearing aids.

Expectations Of Hearing Aids

It is commonly known that experiences can be strongly influenced by expectations. Hearing healthcare studies have shown that descriptions of hearing aids during the hearing aid fitting process can change subjective, and even objective, outcomes with hearing aids. This ‘placebo effect’ happens when an improvement of symptoms is observed, despite using a non active treatment. Research has found that the placebo effect can ease things like pain, fatigue, or depression and of course hearing.

Good Hearing Aid Experiments

Hearing healthcare researchers invited a group of adults between the ages of 54 and 81 for a hearing healthcare consultation, exposing each of them to a different narrative; positive, negative, and neutral. The hearing healthcare appointment was designed to look and feel like an everyday hearing aid fitting appointment, during which the experimenter introduced and fitted a pair of hearing aids. Each participant was asked to provide their initial feedback about the new hearing aids, and then to perform a hearing testing. The participants were not aware that the hearing aids fitted at all appointments were the same, the only difference was the way the hearing aids were described to the participants. The results showed that communication of a positive narrative about hearing aids before a hearing aid fitting led to better hearing performance compared with performance following the negative or neutral narrative conditions. Telling someone a good story makes them hear better!
