Lots of financial self help advice tells us not to waste our money on cups of coffee. Drinks and snacks outside can be expensive and we are often advised that our money could be better spent elsewhere. Scientific studies have shown the many health benefits of drinking coffee, in moderation, can reduce the risk of several chronic diseases. Then there are the well-being effects of relaxing, spending time with yourself or catching up with a good friend over a cup of coffee. If you, or your loved ones, are losing your hearing then a noisy coffee shop might not be the best place to meet, but wearing a hearing aid will restore your hearing, even in noisy places.

Starbucks

Starbucks is synonymous with coffee around the world. The Starbucks brand draws us to its coffee shops wherever we may be with its brand. Starbucks employees are generally polite and well-trained but some of them also wear hearing aids, or are deaf. “This prompted Starbucks USA to conceive a working environment for their deaf staff,” says Rina Siew, CSR Manager at Starbucks Malaysia which opened the world’s first ‘Silent Store’ at Bangsar Village II in 2017. Rina adds, “Starbucks’ Silent Store has a sign at the entrance showing deaf staff work there and a visual fire alarm for it’s deaf staff and deaf customers too. This Starbucks Silent Store was established one year before the same concept in the USA and has been so successful that a second Silent Store was opened in Penang.” Some of Starbucks’ customers are hard of hearing or deaf as well. Rina says, “Before the Covid epidemic, Starbucks at Bangar Village II also offered free classes in sign language and how to spot and avoid cyber fraud for those who are deaf or hard of hearing.” Free classes will resume after the Covid epidemic ends.

Background Noise

Many coffee shops offer quiet, calm environments but sometimes noisy customers will drop in. There is no way to completely eliminate background noise, anywhere. Research findings clearly show that digital hearing aids with particular circuits, FM systems with wireless devices, and directional microphones can effectively reduce background noises. A professional audiology consultant at Clarisound can advise you on the latest models of hearing aids and the most suitable options for hearing aids that will restore your hearing and manage the effects of background noise too.
