Hearing Aids for Children

If your children, or your family members, are losing their hearing then this is a good opportunity to help your family unit out. Granddad, or Grandma, may lose their hearing as they get older but your children, or grandchildren, may also face hearing difficulties as they grow up. Hearing loss can occur in young babies too. Causes of hearing loss in children include;

  • Genetic causes: About half of hearing loss cases in babies is due to genetic causes
  • Infections: about one quarter of hearing loss cases in babies is due to maternal infections during pregnancy, complications after birth, and head trauma
  • Unknown causes also account for some cases

Hearing Loss in Children

Hearing loss can affect your child’s ability to develop speech, language, and social skills. The earlier children with hearing loss start getting professional hearing care, the better chance they will have to grow up normal, happy and productive adults. So if you think that your child is suffering from hearing loss then get their hearing checked as soon as possible. The signs and symptoms of hearing loss are different for each child. Keep an eye, and an ear, out for signs that your child;

  • Does not react to loud noises
  • Does not turn to the source of a sound after six months of age
  • Does not say single words by one year of age
  • Seems to hear some sounds but not others

Other signs could include unclear or delayed speech, or listening to music or TV too loudly.

Hearing Check for Babies

All babies should have a hearing check no later than one month old. If your baby doesn’t get their hearing checked while in hospital then get your child’s hearing checked within the first three months. Don’t stop then, children should have their hearing tested before they enter school or any time that you may have concerns. No single treatment or intervention is the right answer for every child.
