Hearing Aids Hygiene

Hygiene for Hearing Aids

Knowledge is power. Good, reliable, scientific information can protect you and your loved ones and during the Covid-19 epidemic. One thing we are all advised to do by medical experts is to wash our hands with soap, regularly. Personal hygiene is more important now than at any time in our lives. If you, or your loved ones, are losing your hearing and are wearing a hearing aid then keeping your hands clean, and your hearing aids clean too, are important ways to live a good life.

Clean Sound

Keeping your hearing aids clean should be a top priority at any time. Hearing aids are delicate devices. Over time your hearing aids will inevitably become dusty or dirty from contact with your body and the outside world. If you have paid good money for a hearing aid make sure you don’t waste it through neglect or carelessness. If you haven’t already done so, start making it a daily habit to carry out basic cleaning, with longer time spent at the weekends. This will help your hearing aid to last longer. It’s important to learn how to maintain and clean your hearing aid so here are some tips.

Tips for Keeping Your Hearing Aid Clean

  • Wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds
  • Always ensure you take the battery out of your hearing aid before starting to clean
  • Clean the microphone with a brush and a wax pick to remove any ear wax that may have gathered on the surface of the microphone
  • Clean your hearing aid casing paying particular attention to any openings in the casing, and gently brush off any dirt
  • Clean the earmold by removing it from the device and soaking it in warm, soapy water. Wipe it down with hot water every night as well and leave them to dry thoroughly before wearing the hearing aid
  • Put your hearing aid into a drying jar and leave it to dry

New Cleaning Habits

If you are stuck at home during self-isolation most of your daily life has changed. With a lot of time on your hands now is the time to start some new habits and some new hobbies as well. Cleaning your hearing aid isn’t difficult, but it is time consuming. You probably don’t need to do a thorough cleaning every night, just wipe your hearing aid down and soak the earmold. You can leave deeper cleaning for the weekends. The more often you clean your hearing aid the longer it will last and cleaning once a week should prolong its lifetime considerably.

Please clean your hands and your hearing aids regularly.
