Hearing Aids and Parental Advisory

Social media and technology comes with parental advisory settings to protect your young children from harm. If you are aware of cyber threats you can easily control what your children view and listen with settings. The same is true with your child’s hearing. The prevalence of unsafe listening practices from exposure to personal listening devices and loud entertainment venues means that unsafe listening practices may place over 1 billion young people at risk of hearing loss. A good, professional audiologist, like Clarisound, can advise you on wearing suitable hearing aids and safe listening.

Safe Listening

Many people wonder if wearing hearing aids will protect your ears from damage by loud noises. The answer is they will not. Even a tightly fitted, unvented earmold will not provide sufficient protection against harmful sounds above 85 decibels (dB). These include:

  • Car Horns
  •
  • Ambulance Sirens
  •
  • Fire Alarms
  •
  • Lawnmowers
  •
  • MP3 Players (above 60% of the maximum volume)

When your child is exposed to any of these sounds, it is important to wear hearing protection, even if you also wear hearing aids. It's possible to wear hearing protection that works alongside your hearing aids so that you can keep your hearing aids in and protect your hearing. Some ear protectors will significantly reduce the level of noise coming from any source, whilst covering a hearing aid. By leaving your hearing aid in, when the loud noise stops or is turned off, your child should still be able to hear other noises around them and carry on a normal conversation.

Hearing Aids for Children

Hearing loss is not that common in children, studies have shown rates from 2 to 5 per 1,000 children. This doesn’t mean that you should ignore your child’s hearing care. Good parenting involves caring for all aspects of your children’s health. Conductive hearing loss is the most common cause of hearing loss in infants and young children. It happens when something blocks their outer or middle ears and prevents sound waves from reaching their inner ears. So if your young child is showing symptoms of hearing loss then the best thing you can do is get their hearing checked by a good, professional audiologist, like Clarisound.

Your child’s hearing care journey with Clarisound should start with a FREE online hearing check.
