What are the reasons for low hearing aid uptake, use and adherence?

Actions speak louder than words. If you or your loved one is suffering from hearing loss then you may notice that your, or their, behaviour is changing. You may also not be able to hear their words clearly. It’s the same for them too. Hearing loss is often a natural process, attributable to ageing, nutrition and other factors. Many people are sometimes reluctant to start wearing a hearing aid, or hearing aids, or to use them, and keep using them. So how do you get yourself or your loved ones to commit to start wearing and keep wearing a hearing aid? The answers may lie in human psychology. Motivations to wear hearing aids Human psychology begins with motivation. This drives behaviour, understanding and awareness. Finding the motivation to wear a hearing aid can be challenging for many people. There are natural concerns about appearance, fear of technology and even cost. Don’t worry! Recent advances means that wearing a hearing aid can make you look good, be easy to use and are low cost too! Some studies on sources of motivation to wear hearing aids have found a positive association between ‘help seeking’ and motivation by others. It seems that motivation by yourself does not affect hearing aid use. There are mixed findings regarding the association between pre fitting motivation and satisfaction with hearing aids. So these results seem to indicate that if you think that you need to try a hearing aid then telling other people and asking for their help is a good first step. Don’t be shy. Remember that your loved ones care about you. They will be willing to help you arrange a hearing check up. Remind you to wear your new hearing aid and keep complimenting you on how good you look whilst wearing it. Hearing care professionals can help you Other research has suggested that having high expectations about hearing aids results in better overall uptake, use and adherence. These results also showed that pre fitting hearing aid counseling had small, but significant, effects on expectations. Pre fitting counseling helps to address expectations associated with quality of life and self-image. One recent study found that the most important issues for further research is the interaction between the hearing care professional and the client throughout an individual's hearing journey, counseling style, and the role of professionals as gatekeepers.
